Weekend itinerary

Walla Walla weekend itinerary

Arrive downtown Friday, give Saturday to one compact wine district, and save Sunday for Pioneer Park, Whitman Mission, or breakfast before the drive home.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

Downtown Walla Walla, one wine district, and a separate final morning keep the weekend geographically compact.

Best length

2 nights

Three nights leave room for a full wine day and a separate history, cycling, or park morning. Two nights work when Friday arrival is early and Saturday reservations are geographically tight.

Stay

The Marcus Whitman Hotel and Conference Center

The historic Marcus Whitman tower stands downtown near Main Street, with renovated rooms plus The Marc…

Main activity

Downtown Walla Walla, one wine district, and a slower final morning

The core weekend combines a walkable downtown evening, one geographically compact wine day, and a separate park, history, cycling, or breakfast morning.

Trip shape

Downtown evening, valley day, open Sunday

Keep Friday in the historic center, group Saturday by district, and choose Sunday from gardens, history, cycling, or one last tasting near the road out.

Friday

Walk Main Street before dinner.

Check in downtown, follow Main Street and First Avenue past tasting rooms and restored brick storefronts, then settle into a reserved table without another drive.

4:00 PM

Saturday

Taste one part of the valley well.

Downtown, the Airport District, the Westside, and the Southside each support a complete tasting day. Two or three appointments, lunch, and a sober ride reveal more than a cross-valley sprint.

10:00 AM

Main activity

Choose a district before choosing wineries.

The Airport District gathers producers in converted military buildings; downtown is walkable; the Westside follows the road toward Lowden; and the Southside reaches vineyards near the Oregon line and Milton-Freewater.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return downtown before dinner.

After the final tasting, the driver can return the group to the hotel with time to change and walk to a reserved downtown table.

Sunday

Use Sunday for parks, history, cycling, or breakfast.

Walk the mature-tree paths and gardens at Pioneer Park, visit Whitman Mission National Historic Site, ride a suitable published route, or have breakfast downtown before departure.
